What is crucialtests?
Crucialtests is a web-based security audit tool that can help you keep your websites, firewalls & systems safe.
Crucialtests is fully operational but still in beta mode. We are working hard to make a security tool simple to use and yet comprehensive. What is a security audit?
A security audit performs vulnerability assessments of any Internet-accessible hosts (web servers, firewalls, routers, etc, any computer or device with an IP address). An automated and remote scan will be conducted from our servers without any software installation or configuration on your systems.
Why do I need a security audit?
Our security audit will identify improper configuration and known vulnerabilities. Crucialtests will provide you with an external view of how vulnerable an Internet-accessible host is for more than 9863 vulnerabilities (updated each day). The generated report will give you full details and recommended solutions on each security threat found.
Is a vulnerability assessment really useful?
There is no such thing as a 100% perfect secure system, but the vast majority of attacks, and particularly those of worms or viruses, are carried out using publicly disclosed vulnerabilities. You can effectively prevent those attacks and protect your systems using regularly crucialtests.
Doesn't a firewall provide sufficient protection?
Using a firewall is a necessary step to protect your computer or your local network. In today's Internet, no host should be connected to the Internet without a firewall protection. But a firewall leaves some ports open to be able to use standard Internet programs and services like file sharing, email or web, which may be exploited.
Defencive measures are not sufficient, and regular vulnerability assessments will help you to identify potential security threats and fix them.
Will I need recurrent security audits?
Yes, new vulnerabilities are discovered continually. Crucialtests' scan performs 9863 different vulnerability tests, and tests are added daily. All types of systems are tested, Windows, GNU/Linux, BSD, ... even network devices like routers (e.g. Cisco).
Remember, only one vulnerability that is not detected and fixed may allow a worm to propagate into your computer, or worst, let someone take control of your system and proprietary information.
Which software does this service use?
This service uses the famous Nessus vulnerability scanner and several other Free Softwares like Nikto, Nmap, etc. With at least 50,000 users worldwide, Nessus is in our opinion the best mature and effective vulnerability scanner. While other providers try to obfuscate the software they use, we like to be as honest and transparent as possible, and we are very proud of using quality Free Softwares ("free as in freedom").
